The ‘n of 1’ (n=1) trial is an under-utilised study design in clinical research. The ‘n of 1’ trial represents a formalisation of the ‘trial of therapy’ treatment approach commonly used by practitioners, by incorporating aspects of randomised clinical trial methodology. The ‘n of 1’ trial is acceptable to patients because it gives them a sense of empowerment and it can improve the patient–practitioner relationship.
