- For its first five years, Melbourne Workers Theatre was based in a temporary pre-fab shed beside the tracks at the Jolimont Train Maintenance Depot, operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metrail) just outside the central business district of Melbourne, Working and rehearsing in the midst of a busy train yard, the company defined itself in terms of an ongoing relationship with the railway workers, who (to quote an MWT brochure) 'acted as advisors, supporters, critics, and, most importantly, personal and political allies.
