- This paper argues that, while assignments are presented in the expatriation literature as a mechanism for the transfer of knowledge, this literature has not adequately confronted the critical issue of defining the knowledge held by expatriates in line with theory clarifying the strategic importance of knowledge. It is proposed that, by defining expatriate’s knowledge by its uniqueness or idiosyncrasy to the firm, we can better integrate the study of assignments with core internal strategic issues for the MNE, as defined by the resource-based view of the firm.
