- In a recent issue of Drug and Alcohol Review, Poulin argues that school smoking bans might not be entirely benign. In the same issue, Midford perhaps goes further when noting that Poulin’s findings ‘... shed light on the unintended consequences of abstinence focused programmes, particularly for students who are at greatest risk in terms of connection to the school’. Certainly, in a tobacco control environment such as Australia, where smoking is banned in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, public transport, nearly all indoor work-places and most sports stadia, schools have a strong mandate, even an obligation, to maintain a smoke-free environment, notwithstanding any debatable negative impact. The fact that sale of tobacco products to those aged 18 years and under is illegal in all Australian states and territories makes the argument for smoke-free environments in this formative age group even more cogent.
