- Composition of popular music has remained substantially consistent since 1950 despite the emergence of a perplexing array of new genres and the reworking of some established ones. Current commercially successful genres include rap, neo-folk, new country, trance, gabba, death metal, jungle, acid jazz, americana, hip hop, SoCal punk, cabaret noir and drum-and-bass. Among all these genres the work of talented songwriters remains preëminent.
