Title: Understanding design collaboration: comparing face-to-face sketching to designing in virtual environments

Description: Recent developments in communication and information technology offer new collaborative design environments to designers. Designing and collaboration has been changing with the introduction of these new design environments. We conducted a series of experiments to identify similarities and differences between co-located design and remotely located design sessions in order to have a better understanding of the impact of different virtual environments on design collaboration. Our results show that the changes in the design behaviour can be categorised in two different ways: (1) the effect of being in the same location and (2)the effect of the type of external representations.
