The poster illustrate a classic melodramatic situation, the last-minute rescue of the brave hero from execution for a crime he did not commit. The long and golden-haired heroine is also a classic figure. Hands Across The Sea by Henry Pettitt was originally performed in Manchester in 1888, transferring to the Princess's in London later in the same year.
