Description: This chapter first sketches some arguments for why cooperative education programs can become areas of strategic differentiation in the 'business' and the remaking of higher education. We illustrate the experience of one institution, the University of Newcastle, by discussing some strategic and operational benefits of what we previously called 'work-based experiential learning', but now are calling 'engaged learning' We then identify the partnership benefits of working with stakeholders such as employers, the local community, other educational institutions and other associations. We conclude with observations about current issues faced by educational institutions and about the challenges that remain.
