Description: The article is the first of two describing the contingencies that drive and influence the operations of multidisciplinary palliative care teams. Australian research into the management of multidisciplinary palliative care teams is introduced and appropriate elements of a wide-ranging literature review are reported. A model of the management and operation of multidisciplinary palliative care teams is presented to provide a context and to indicate the scope of the research completed so far.
