Over the past two decades the tourism industry has developed a reputation as holding promise to attractive professional careers. However, the increasingly mobile, casualised and part–time employment opportunities that dominate the tourism industry mean that career opportunities and trajectories are rarely linear and require individuals to act strategically. The individual who succeeds in this setting must develop the skills and ability to carve out what has been termed a ‘portfolio career’. This paper examines the professionalisation of the tourism industry and considers the approach to skill development that has dominated the industry, highlighting how the pre-occupation with occupation specific-skills in the VET and higher education sector has failed to adequately prepare graduates for portfolio careers in the tourism industry. This paper argues that the recent emphasis upon generic skills in professional preparation and higher education present challenges for tourism education.
